Daniela Corda, Gender Summit 4 EU speaker

Daniela Corda is a cell biologist, Director of the Institute of Protein Biochemistry of the National Research Council in Naples, Italy. She obtained her degree in Biological Sciences at Perugia University, Italy and her PhD in Life Sciences at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel. She has been working in the signal transduction and membrane lipid dynamics field for more than 20 years, first in Israel, and then at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA, for her post-doctoral studies. She moved to the “Mario Negri” Pharmacological Research Institute in Milan in 1986, and in 1987 she was one of the founders of the Consorzio Mario Negri Sud, where she served as Head of the Department of Cell Biology and Oncology from 1996 to 2003 and Director of Research and development until 2009. Since 1998 she has been active in science policy focussing on career development in Europe and on gender-related issues within European organisation such as the European Life Scientist Organisation (ELSO), the EC Marie Curie Programme, the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) where she now chairs the Working Group on the Career of Young Scientists. Prof. Corda is a member of the genSET Science Leaders Panel; the Gender Summits were established on the recommendation of the panel.

Borchgrevink MD, is former Director of Medicine, and Special Adviser for International Affairs in the Research Council of Norway (RCN). Before he was consultant/researcher in audiology and brain function diagnosis. His efforts on gender issues include the EU ERA Communication Expert Advisory Group 2013 (subgroup gender), the EU Gender Impact Assessment Expert advisory Group (2013), and the Science Europe Task Force on Gender and Diversity (2013). He has been organiser/chair/speaker at the Gender Summits 2011-14, and at several EU Presidency conferences; Chair WG Monitoring and indicators under ERA Steering Group on Human Resources and Mobility (SGHRM),  Chair WG Mobility in the European Science Foundation (ESF) MO Forum Researcher Careers, and representative of the EU Work Programme Committees on People; -Health; -Infrastructure; the EU IMI SRG, the EU SFIC India Group, the EU Charter and Code Advisory Group, and in the Steering Groups of EURAXESS TOP1+2, and the EU FP7 GenderNet. Now retired from RCN, he is engaged in individual capacity as Vice-Chair of the EU Marie S Curie Advisory Group, as EU Expert in ERA WG Monitoring and indicators, and EU Human Resource Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R). 

Curt Rice, Gender Summit steering committee member

Since August 1, 2015, Curt Rice has been the Rector (President) of the Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (Høgskolen i Oslo og Akershus).  In addition to his work as Rector, Curt Rice leads Norway’s Committee on Gender Balance and Diversity in Research, and  was the head of the Board for Current Research Information System in Norway (CRIStin) through 2016. Curt Rice is also a reserve member of the Board for the Language Council of Norway (Språkrådet).

Elizabeth Pollitzer, Gender Summit steering committee chairElizabeth Pollitzer PhD is co-founder and Director of Portia, an organization devoted to improving gender equality in STEM and promoting the inclusion of the gender dimension in STEM. She has 20 years’ experience teaching and researching in the Departments of Computing and Management at Imperial College, University of London. Her original training was in Biophysics. She now applies this scientific background to her work as director of Portia. Elizabeth has over 15 years experience in the gender and STEM field, she is also an expert adviser on gender issues to the European Commission. Portia was the coordinator of the genSET project, the Gender Summits were established as part of the genSET project.

The long term vision and overarching goals of the Summits are guided by the Steering Committee listed here, many of whom served on the genSET Science Leaders Panel or represent leading partners of previous Regional Committees. The Gender Summits were established by Portia Ltd in 2011 as part of its genSET project. Since then Portia has worked in regional partnerships to convene further Summits. A Regional Committee is set up for each event. Proposals for Regional events are being accepted on an on-going basis. Contact us to find out about holding a Summit in your region.
