Janine Austin Clayton, MD, Director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is the architect of the policy requiring NIH-funded scientists to consider sex as a biological variable in their studies. With NIH Director Francis Collins, MD, PhD, Clayton also co-chairs the NIH Working Group on Women in Biomedical Careers. A native Washingtonian, Clayton is an award-winning, board-certified ophthalmologist who has authored more than 80 publications.
