Maria Schäfer is a scientific associate at the Center of Excellence Women and Science CEWS at GESIS-Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences in Cologne, Germany. She holds a diploma in Area Studies Latin America, having studied at the University of Cologne and the University of Guadalajara, and graduated from the College of Europe in Bruges with a Master of Arts degree in European Political and Administrative Studies. During her studies, Maria Schäfer worked at the Jean Monnet Chair for European Affairs at the University of Cologne.
Following a traineeship at the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) in Vilnius with a focus on Gender Mainstreaming and gender-based violence she conducted the study ‘Review of Institutional Mechanisms and Institutional Capacity for Mainstreaming Gender Equality in the EU Member States’ in Germany for EIGE. Since September 2013 she has been working at CEWS as the project manager of the FP7-funded EU project “INstitutional Transformation for Effecting Gender Equality in Research” (INTEGER). CEWS is involved in this project as the external evaluator of the measures for transformational change designed and implemented in its project partner institutions.
