GS7 Regional Committee
A Committee is established for each regional Gender Summit. For the Gender Summit 7 Europe 2015 the following Committee members are kindly contributing their expertise to the success of the event:
Dr Hans M. Borchgrevink
Former Special Adviser, International Staff, The Research Council Norway (RCN), Norway
Hans M. Borchgrevink MD, is former Director of Medicine, and Special Adviser for International Affairs in the Research Council of Norway (RCN). Before he was consultant/researcher in audiology and brain function diagnosis. His efforts on gender issues include the EU ERA Communication Expert Advisory Group 2013 (subgroup gender), the EU Gender Impact Assessment Expert advisory Group (2013), and the Science Europe Task Force on Gender and Diversity (2013). He has been organiser/chair/speaker at the Gender Summits 2011-14, and at several EU Presidency conferences; Chair WG Monitoring and indicators under ERA Steering Group on Human Resources and Mobility (SGHRM), Chair WG Mobility in the European Science Foundation (ESF) MO Forum Researcher Careers, and representative of the EU Work Programme Committees on People; -Health; -Infrastructure; the EU IMI SRG, the EU SFIC India Group, the EU Charter and Code Advisory Group, and in the Steering Groups of EURAXESS TOP1+2, and the EU FP7 GenderNet. Now retired from RCN, he is engaged in individual capacity as Vice-Chair of the EU Marie S Curie Advisory Group, as EU Expert in ERA WG Monitoring and indicators, and EU Human Resource Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R).
Prof Heike Kahlert
Chair of Sociology/Social Inequality and Gender, Faculty of Social Science, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany.
Heike Kahlert is a sociologist and gender studies scholar at the Faculty of Social Science, Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany) where she holds the Chair of Sociology/Social Inequality and Gender and is also head of Coordinating the Marie Jahoda Visiting Chair in International Gender Studies. Since 2012 she is also affiliated member of the Center for Feminist Social Studies at Örebro University (Sweden). Her main research topics are: transformation of knowledge in modernity, gender relations and social change in welfare states, institutionalized inequalities in education, change management in public-profit-organisations from a perspective of gender and diversity. Currently she is mainly conducting research and publishing on scientific careers of the next generation of scholars in political science and chemistry, gender studies in times of the new governance of science, national policies and discursive practices at universities with respect to excellence and/or gender equality and on family policies and media discourses on generativity and gender in Germany.

Dr Helga Kumrić
Researcher and Lecturer, Physics Department, University of Stuttgart, Germany.
Dr Helga Kumrić is a researcher and lecturer at the Physics Department of the University of Stuttgart, Germany. She studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Zagreb, Croatia and obtained her PhD in Stuttgart while raising three children. The development of transmission systems for high frequency heating of fusion plasmas and collaborations with leading fusion physics institutions all over the world was her main focus for over 20 years. Recently, as member of the 1. Physikalisches Institut at the University of Stuttgart, she is involved in the research of plasmonics and simulations of microwaves for applications in solid state physics. During her academic career she served as equal opportunities officer of the Faculty for Mathematics and Physics, as member of numerous appointment committees in the department and supporting activities to promote Physics and Mathematics to girls and female students at the University. From 2005 to 2009 she took part in the Steering Committee of the CMA Virtual Integrated Unit – Gender Mainstreaming (VIU-GM) of the international CMA-NoE: Complex Metallic Alloys und participated in workshops and meetings in Paris, Stuttgart and Krakow. Practices in increasing the number of female students in STEM disciplines and the promotion of an efficient work balance for young parents is the main interest of Dr. Kumrić gender and diversity engagement.
Prof Nuno Marques da Costa
Assistant Professor, Institute of Geography and Spatial planning, University of Lisbon, Portugal.
Nuno Marques da Costa, PhD in Geography is Assistant Professor at Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning, University of Lisbon, and researcher of Centre for Geographical Studies, since 1979. He developed research on Regional and Urban Analysis, Transport analysis, GIS and Transport and Gender. He also work as consultant of public institutions on regional planning.
Prof Pat O'Connor
Professor of Sociology and Social Policy, Department of Sociology, University of Limerick, Ireland.
Prof O’Connor’s core teaching and research interest is gender. Her current research interest is in the gendering of management and higher education, and more broadly in the gendering of organizations, leadership, excellence and careers. It is reflected in her teaching interests in higher education; in gender theory; in the gendered aspects of the family; the state and masculinity. Initially Prof O’Connor was most interested in researching the worlds of love. So she focused on friendships; mother/daughter; sister/sister; marital pleasure. Some of these interests were reflected in her book on Friendships Between Women (published by Harvester/Wheatsheaf and Guildford, and nominated by Choice as an outstanding academic book). Later, Prof O’Connor tried to understand the impact of gender on children and young people, and this was reflected in Irish Children and Teenagers in a Changing World where she looked at the extent to which young people’s lives were ‘mapped’ by gender, despite the influences of globalization and individualization. Her interest in both the public and the private world was reflected in a study of women’s lives in the home and at work and that became Emerging Voices: Women in Contemporary Irish Society. She has become increasingly interested in the gendering of public power: in the state, in semi-state structures, in higher education and in the wider society. Her own experiences as Dean of the Faculty (2000-2010) have been part of this context. Her book on Management and Gender in Higher Education (2014 with MUP: distribution by Palgrave in the US) reflects some of these interests. Prof O'Connor has published roughly 100 peer reviewed publications in these and other areas (see under Publications).
Prof Rossella Palomba
Social Demographer and former Research Director and Associate, National Research Council (CNR), Italy.
Rossella Palomba is a social demographer and former Research Director and Associate at the National Research Council (CNR) in Italy. Her main fields of research are: the impact of policies on gender equity; gender statistics and indicators; women and science. Rossella has coordinated a number of national and international projects and was member of numerous EU expert groups on women in science. She was member of the ETAN Report working group, Italian EU Ambassador for equal opportunities in science, member of the Gender and Excellence EU experts’ group. Rossella chairs in many national and international research committees. She has written more than 180 articles, books and research reports on social policies and gender.
Dr Elizabeth Pollitzer
Director, Portia Ltd, Gender Summit founder, UK.
Chair, Panel 3: Shaping the Gender Summit's regional and global mission
Elizabeth Pollitzer PhD is founder and Director of Portia, an organization devoted to improving gender equality in STEM and promoting the inclusion of the gender dimension in STEM. She has 20 years’ experience teaching and researching in the Departments of Computing and Management at Imperial College, University of London. Her original training was in Biophysics. She now applies this scientific background to her work as director of Portia. Portia was the coordinator of the genSET project, the Gender Summits were established as part of the genSET project.
Prof Rachel Erhard
President's Advisor on Women's Affairs, University of Tel Aviv, Israel.
Prof Erhard is Tel Aviv University's advisor to the President on Gender Equity. She's working to introduce institutional changes aimed at promoting gender equity; to increase the rate of women in faculties, committees, conferences and prizes. Prof. Erhard also developed unique career workshops for female PhD candidates. Prof. Erhard has held various senior positions in the education system, the most recent of them being Head of the Research and Development Unit at the Psychological and Counseling Service, Ministry of Education and Culture.
Prof Jürgen Popp
Scientific Director, Institute of Photonic Technology, University of Jena, Germany.
Juergen Popp studied chemistry at the universities of Erlangen and Wuerzburg, Germany. After his PhD in Physical Chemistry, he joined Yale University for postdoctoral work. He subsequently returned to Wuerzburg University where he finished his habilitation in 2002. Since 2002, he holds a chair for Physical Chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena. Furthermore, he is the Scientific Director of the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena, since 2006. His core research focus is biophotonics. Corner stones are the development and application of linear and non-linear Raman-technologies with particular focus on clinical diagnosis. In this context, Raman methods are utilized and developed according to the needs of pathology, oncology, and infection/ sepsis. He has published more than 540 journal papers. He is founding editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Biophotonics. In 2012, he received an honorary doctoral degree from Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Professor Jürgen Popp is the recipient of the 2013 Robert Kellner Lecture Award.
Dr Brigitte Ratzer
Head of Office for Gender Competence, Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), Austria.
Dr Brigitte Ratzer studied Chemical Engineering at TU Wien. She is a longstanding lecturer at various Austrian universities and junior researcher at TU Wien with research-projects in the fields of Bioethics and Biomedical Technology-Assessment, Social Studies of Knowledge and Feminist Research in Science and Technology. Since 2005, Dr Ratzer is Head of the Office for Gender Competence at TU Wien. She is also currently engaged in building up a network for transferring feminist and gender knowledge to engineering research groups and to the curricula.
