Max Haller, born 1947 in Sterzing (Italy), Dr.phil. University of Vienna, Dr. phil. habil. University of Mannheim (Germany), since 1985 professor of sociology at the University of Graz (Austria). 1986-89, president of the Austrian Sociological Association; member of the Austrian Academy of Science; 1988-92 co-founder and 1999-2001 Vice-President of the European Sociological Association, now Honorary Member of this association. 1984-85 co-founder of the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP). Visiting professor at the Universities of Klagenfurt and Innsbruck (Austria), Mannheim and Heidelberg (Germany), Trento (Italy), Sta. Barbara (California, USA) and St. Augustine University of Tanzania (Tanzania).
Prof Haller has given approximately 230 lectures at scientific conferences and other occasions all over the world. Hi research areas include: social inequality and stratification, ethnic-national relations and identities, sociology of European integration, comparative social research, and sociological theory. Prof Haller has been the director of approximately 20 research projects; published 16 monographs, edited 16 books and about 240 scientific articles in leading international sociological journals (many of them in English, several translated into Italian, French and Hungarian). In 2006, Prof Haller was awarded »Best Paper Award« of the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies for the article »How social relations and structures can produce life satisfaction and happiness« (Social Indicators Research, vol. 75) and 2010 the “Best Publication Award by an International Scholar” of the American Sociological Association Section on “Global and Transnational Sociology” for his book “The International Social Survey Programme (ed. with R. Jowell and T. Smith 2009). He is included in the “Dictionary of Eminent Social Scientists« of the Mattei Dogan Foundation, Paris:
